Southern Swing II

, Reporter9:20 p.m. EDT March 26, 2016

As baseball and softball season swing into full gear — pun intended —the area's best power hitters are being lured out of winter hibernation.

In close contests, power and cleanup hitters will be called upon to knock in the go-ahead run, notch a sacrifice fly to tie the game; performing their specified job duties to the best of their abilities.

What makes these hitters so notable isn't the fact that they can hit a ball a mile but rather the fact that they have the "clutch" gene.

This week's "10 to Comprehend" takes a look at some of the area's best power hitters who possess ice in their veins.

I'll say this about Leo Woods: What he might lack in height, he makes up for it in courage. Woods is poised to be one of Chillicothe's better hitters this year. Most recently, the third baseman signed with Ohio Christian University to play the game at the next level. On the field, Woods .347 as a junior and scored 14 runs. If he's in the middle of the Cavaliers' order, opponents should probably choose to pitch around him. Defensively, Leo's pretty smooth, too. The Cavaliers are lucky to have a student-athlete like him.

Obviously it's spring in Ohio...schedules will change so check local team websites for updates.

4th Annual First Pitch Classic Begins Saturday

32 high school teams will participate in this year's First National Bank

First Pitch Classic, presented by CNK Athletic Equipment

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints will host the week-long 4th Annual First National Bank of Waverly “First Pitch Classic” beginning Saturday, March 26.

A total of 32 high school teams will compete in an 18-game schedule over the seven-day period. “Opening Day” for Ohio High School baseball is Saturday, March 26, and there will be four games slated at VA Memorial Stadium, starting at 10:00 a.m.

There will be two games each afternoon beginning on Monday, March 28, running through Friday, April 1, with the first game starting at 4:15 p.m. each day. The event will wrap up on Saturday, April 2 with four more games, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The “First Pitch Classic” was established in 2013 with the idea of providing local baseball fans the opportunity to watch some of the “elite” prep programs from around the state and southeastern Ohio.  Many of the teams are perennial powers and recent state champions, making this week-long event one of the top showcases of high school baseball in Ohio.

A number of the players featured in these games are already committed to top Division I collegiate baseball programs, and many more are being heavily recruited to further their respective careers in baseball. The odds are very good that some of these young players will be performing in the professional ranks in years to come.

CNK Athletic Equipment of Circleville is also a contributing sponsor.

Each day’s admission is $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for students. Concessions will be available also.
