CHILLICOTHE – After entering last week’s American Legion Region V Tournament at 14-18, it would’ve been easy for Chillicothe Post 757 to lay down, drop its first two ballgames and call it a summer.
In fact, the Colts would’ve had a closet full of excuses at their disposal to explain an early exit: multiple injuries, key player departures during the middle of the season, a brutal schedule, etc.
Instead, the players chose to fight and the result was a tournament run they won’t soon forget.
“We had injuries all year long and we had a few kids who left the team for their own reasons,” 757 coach Tom Barr said. “We usually go into the tournament with an 18-man roster. Instead, we ended up playing 56 innings over the course of three days with 13 kids. At the end, I told them that I was as proud of them as I had ever been of any group. It was a major gut check and what they did was impressive.”
With that group of 13, Post 757 finished as the Region V runner-up, second to Circleville Post 134. But it wasn’t the end result that was impressive, it was the Colts’ journey to get there.
Monday, they beat Hillsboro Post 129 by a 7-6 final before falling to No. 1 seeded Circleville 134, 9-4.
That loss ignited a fire.
“When we came into Tuesday, it was a sense of no nonsense,” Barr said. “The kids knew we could either roll over and die or come out swinging. Portsmouth (Post 23) comes out, jumps on us and takes an 8-2 lead. But in a back-and-forth game, we stepped up. We did that all week.”
The Colts eventually pounded out 21 hits against Portsmouth 23, squeaking out a 14-13 win.
Their reward was a date with Chillicothe Post 62 later that day, where they produced more magic.
After heading into the ninth inning trailing Post 62 9-5, 757 scored four runs in the ninth to tie it and nine more in the 10th to secure an 18-9 win, setting up a meeting with Waverly Post 142, Wednesday.
“I just kept telling the guys that it’s a marathon,” Barr said. “We had to go into every game knowing anything could happen. It doesn’t matter what the score is at any point if you’re still alive and kicking.”
Running low on arms, 757 pulled out a 6-4 win over 142 while starting Sam Walsh on the mound, a pitcher that spent most of his summer playing for 757’s junior team.
“We sent Sam out there and he did a great job for us,” Barr said. “That’s how everybody on our roster played. They knew their role and embraced it. Anything they could do to help, that’s what they did.”
The Colts eventually fell in their next contest, 16-6, to Circleville 134 in the championship game.
But considering 757’s initial chances at even advancing into the title game, Barr was more than happy with his team’s efforts.
“We could’ve lost our first two games and been done. And, the crazy part? Nobody would’ve been surprised,” he said. “We came back to win every game we won. We had kids throwing that we hadn’t thrown all summer. They knew it was their last opportunity to lay it all on the line and they stepped up.”
In total, the Colts’ offense hit a collective .339 during the tournament run, producing 55 runs. Outstanding individual performers included Walsh (.381, nine RBIs), Bo Dratwa (.481, seven RBIs), Brian Smith (.462, seven runs) and Trenton Harris (.419, nine runs).
While 757 will say goodbye to three 18-year-olds, including Harris and Smith, the future looks bright.
The senior team ends its season at 18-20, the junior team finished 28-11 and the 13U Colts were 18-6 – good for an overall program record of 64-37.
“It's an exciting time to be part of the Chillicothe 757 Colts baseball program and represent our community in a positive way,” Barr said. “We've already started scheduling games and tryouts for 2018, our 49th consecutive year in Chillicothe. We’re in great shape moving forward.”
Once again the Adena Warriors High School baseball teams will be selling coupons as our major 2017 fundraiser. This fundraiser will kickoff on Wednesday March 8th and run through Tuesday March 21st.

Chillicothe’s Jacob Chester picked up the win on the hill, throwing four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, and striking out four.

CHILLICOTHE - In its first two meetings with Chillicothe Post 757 this summer, Chillicothe Post 62 was outscored 12-3 in two losses.
But the third meeting was a charm for the Riverbats (10-7) as they beat the Colts on Wednesday night by a 6-1 final at Ross County Park.
The victory came on the heels of a superb pitching performance from starter Josh George, who tossed all seven innings without allowing an earned run. The right-handed knuckleballer struck out four, walked two and allowed nine hits.
"Josh wanted this game bad," Post 62 coach Bo Popp said. "He played for Post 757 last year so he told me: 'I'm going all seven innings.' I just told him to do what he does. But he pitched well tonight and carried us."
While the Colts (7-13) were kept off balance thanks to George, Post 62's offense tagged the ball well throughout the game. Facing Colts' starter Jacob Chester, the Riverbats came up with timely hitting and took advantage of each Post 757 fielding miscue.
"Right now, we're in the swing of things and we're hitting the baseball like we should right at the right times," Popp said. "These boys are playing their hearts out. I'm extremely proud of them."
In the bottom of the first, Post 62 took an early 1-0 edge when Russell Throckmorton pranced home on an RBI single off the bat of Gage Jones. That lead would stay the same until the bottom of the fourth.
Hunter Hopkins started the fourth with a single into left field, followed by a double from Tanner Doles to put runners on second and third with none gone. After Chester struck the next batter out, Throckmorton singled into right field, scoring Hopkins and moving Doles to third. With the score 2-0, Jeremy Brooks grounded out to second, plating Doles and making it 3-0.
Carson Stauffer then stepped to the plate with two outs and singled home Throckmorton, allowing the lead to swell to 4-0.
Post 757 finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. Hayden Henness led the inning off with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Henness then scored on an RBI single from Zack Stapleton, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
But that was the only run the Colts would muster.
In the bottom of the sixth, Post 62 added two more insurance runs on RBI singles from Owen Diehl and Tanner Popp to seal the deal.
"We're playing really good baseball right now, and we feel like we're hitting our stride at the right time," Bo Popp said. "We beat Athens in the 12th inning in our last game and we won like we did tonight. We've got to use that momentum now to get the ball rolling even more."
The Riverbats pounded out a team total of 15 hits; six players had two each. Both teams left nine on the base paths.
For Post 62, Throckmorton was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI; Stauffer was 2-for-4 with a run, two stolen bases, and an RBI; Jones was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI; Diehl was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Popp was 2-for-4 with an RBI; and Doles was 2-for-3 with a run.
Chester took the loss for the Colts, throwing six innings and allowing six runs — five earned — on 15 hits. The southpaw struck out three and walked one.
At the plate, Henness finished 2-for-3 with a run and Stapleton was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Eli Kunkel and Bo Dratwa both chipped in as well, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively.
Post 757 will be back in action Thursday night against Hillsboro Post 129 at Hoffman Field in Chillicothe's Mary Lou Patton Park. Post 62 also will play again Thursday, traveling to Branch Rickey Park to take on Portsmouth Post 23.

CHILLICOTHE - Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Chillicothe Post 757's Brian Smith came through with a two-out, two-run single to give the Colts a 2-1 lead.
They never looked back.
Post 757 (6-5) opened this weekend's fifth annual Jim Jadwin Memorial Tournament with a 6-2 win over rival Chillicothe Post 62 on Thursday night at VA Memorial Stadium.
"Tonight was a little different than our normal thing," Post 757 coach Tom Barr said. "We're in pool play (of the Jadwin Memorial Tournament) right now so it's nice to start the weekend off with a win. The top four are the only ones that get to advance to Sunday. That's only a third of the teams competing. So it's good to start off on the right foot."
Post 757's JD Blevins (2-1) was knocked around a bit in the first inning. After dodging a couple bullets, the southpaw calmed down and threw gas the rest of the way. Blevins picked up the win in 6 1/3 innings of work, allowing just two hits and fanning 13.
"JD was a stud tonight," Barr said. "He started slow, but part of that was because of being out of rhythm a bit. But he stepped up after. I talked to him, and JD is his biggest critic. The first thing he commented about was his six walks. So he knows we can't have that. But he continued to battle and got the win."
The Riverbats (3-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Carson Stauffer stole home after reaching on a catcher's interference call.
That slight edge would last until the fifth, when Smith knocked in Corey Righman and Trenton Harris with a single up the middle, giving the Colts a 2-1 lead. Smith later scored on a Riverbats fielding error to extend the advantage to 3-1.
In the sixth, 757 got a leadoff hit from Anthony Sipple, who proceeded to swipe second base with no outs. Blevins followed with a single of his own to plate Sipple and make it a 4-1 ballgame. With Blevins standing on second after a stolen base, Bo Dratwa drew a two-out walk to set the stage for Harris.
On the first pitch he saw, Harris lined a ball into the left-center field gap for a bases-clearing triple, making it 6-1.
"Trenton is doing really well, and he's doing a really nice job at shortstop as well," Barr said. "He's just getting better and better and better. I've had him lower in the lineup, kind of treating him as a second leadoff guy. That's a nice thing to have."
Post 62 scored its second and final run in the top of the seventh after Blevins exited the ballgame. Stauffer crossed home plate on an RBI single off the bat of Gage Jones to round out the 6-2 final.
Jones finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Stauffer was 0-for-2 with two runs. Jeff Webb took the loss on the mound, throwing five innings, giving up five runs — just two earned — on eight hits and striking out one.
For 757, Harris led the offense with a 3-for-3 outing, including a triple, a run and a pair of RBIs. Cody Hendershot was 2-for-3; Smith was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs; and Blevins was 1-for-3 with a run, two stolen bags and an RBI.
